hi y'all,
here's my interpretion of shadowman. have mercy with me if you think i'm
completely off base, it's the first time i tried to dig deeper into a k's
song. my elaboration is short, but i'm glad that we chose shadowman because
it's though to interpret and i'm quite sure everyones interpretion differs
from that one of the others of this list.
generally, gert was in a depressive mood when he wrote that song. it's not a
happy song, it's about the dark side of life.
> 'Any time tomorrow I will lie and say I'm fine
> I'll say yes when I mean no.
gert isn't fine but when asked how he is he would say he's fine - the person
meeting gert is anticipating this particular answer. that's the "standard"
answer to that particular question. so gert lies about how he's feeling and
it makes him feel even worse.
> And any time tomorrow
> The sun will cease to shine
one day, everything will get worse. i'm not sure if he means the situation
that has driven him into his depressive mood, another situation that will
make this situation look brighter in retrospective or that one day he will
die or one day the world will stop to exist (the sun will cease to shine).
> There's a shadowman who told me so'
i think the shadowman is a metaphor for something that's inside him (like
mephisto in faust) - the negative feelings, the pessimism. everybody knows
that someday everything ends, so does gert. he knows that but he doesn't
like the fact. so he splits the negativity to an imaginary person, the
shadowman.
> 'Any time tomorrow the rain will play a part
> of a play i used to know
> Like no other
> Used to know it all by heart
> But a shadowman inside has let it go'
he feels better now (a shadowman inside has let it go) but he knows life
will not always be on the bright side (any time tomorrow the rain will play
a part). he won't forget the state of mind and the situation of the first
verse (of a play i used to know like no other used to know it all by heart).
> 'Oh no, let go of my hand
> Oh no, not now I'm down, my friend
gert asks the shadowman to let him go, lead his life and find happyness
again. gert is down, now the shadowman has done his work and can leave him.
> You came to me anew
as he feared in the second verse, life is on the dark side again, so the
shadowman came again.
> Or was it me who came to you
> Shadowman'
or did gert need the shadowman to balance out his life? to remind him of the
important things of life, to appreciate the small things in life.
> 'Any time tomorrow
> I will try to do what's right
gert tries to do whatever society wants him to do.
> Making sence of all I can
> Any time tomorrow
trying to make sense of it.
> I'll pretend to see the light
> I just might
> Shadowman'
he will look out for happyness and as he is open for it he might find it.
> 'Oh, here's the sun again
yes, he fund it, more so than in the second verse.
> Isn't it appealing to recline
> Get blinded and to go into the light again
it would be easy to leave all the bad things behind, forget about them and
just be happy to be happy again. but he is aware that there will be thougher
times again and that he is happy doesn't mean everyone else is.
> And doesn't it make you sad
> to see so much love denied
> See nothing but a shadowman inside.'
he looks to the other people around him who are struggeling with their
shadowmen. they need help and support and could give so much but nobody
cares.
> 'Oh, if your coming down to rescue me
> Now would be perfect...'
sometimes everybody needs down times just to fully appreciate the bright
sides of life. gert is on the brigt side now and knows it. as a human being
he also knows that the shadowman belongs to him. he needs him to bring him
back to the "real life" as he's on cloud # 9.
the music, the sound reminds me of a prayer to a higher power (the
shadowman).
hope to read other interpretions as well.
