okay, wie lange versprochen, hier der erste teil des interviews, exklusiv für euch.

wie gesagt, leider hatte ich kaum vorbereitungszeit, deshalb konnte ich einige fragen, die mir dann während sarahs langer monologe eingefallen sind, nicht mehr anbringen, aber alles in allem dürfte auch sarah das interview ganz gut gefallen haben. hoff ich doch, zumindest war sie bei einigen themen begeistert dabei.

Interview mit Sarah Bettens am Two Days A Week Festival, Wiesen, 26. August 2004

Ines: It’s great to see you happy again.

Sarah: Thank you.

Ines: And it’s also great that you’re finally playing in Austria because you postponed the Vienna show.

Sarah: Yeah, I know. It’s just things happen and always out of your control and we always we always love it here and especial this festival. We’ve been here a couple of times so we’re happy that we have a opportunity playing in front of our Austrian fans again.

Ines: Yeah. I … I was surprised that you played the last k’s Choice show here in Austria, in Wiesen one year ago and not in Belgium or Holland or …?

Sarah: Yeah it just kinda happened that way because we d.. we d… we did the last k’s Choice show in Belgium and then and then we happened to play even more shows after that and we’re like okay, you know? Uhm and then this just happened to be the end of the you know the last little tour that we did and it was kind of a good way to end because it is always a fun festival. People are always really nice and uhm you know we played here before and stuff so ah it didn’t it didn’t necessarily have to be like our farewell concert very big you know?

Ines: Yeah.

Sarah: It’s it was kinda this is the last show, this is good.

Ines: Was it emotional or…?

Sarah: Yeah. Yeah. No

Ines: or did you close this chapter way before and knew this …

Sarah: It’s been emotional at different times like that night was emotional and a couple of months before when we played our last belgian shows was emotional an emotional night and uhm we’ve had you know moments since then when ah you know I leave on tour or something and my brother’s not coming. Ah just moments that are different and a little weird and … . But it’s all been good.

Ines: That’s fine.

Sarah: Yeah, yeah, that’s good.

Ines: Ah so I like to talk about your new CD. There were problems with Sony, you couldn’t release it with Sony so you changed the label and then you put out the mini EP just to … to be able to tour?

Sarah: Right. Yeah. I ah … At that point I had enough songs ready to put something out but not enough songs for a full album. And also I didn’t want to threw a full album out there and not give it the time it needs to set it up right and uhm … but I did wanna play really bad and I .. I’d but I‘d find out from Sony that we weren’t gonna working together anymore it’s just like “okay I wasted one year doing nothing just waiting to record my record ‘cause I’m ready”. And I just couldn’t face another summer of doing nothing and waiting again and … And also things don’t really happen when you’re at home you know? Things don’t … like good things don’t happen to you when you’re waiting. Good things happen when you’re working and when you’re out there and when you’re trying and uhm a lot of things that did have happen in our career have been you know lucky coincidences but those coincidences only happen because you’re somewhere you know they don’t happen when you’re sitting in your couch at home. So I really felt like I have to I’ll just have to be out there and start, get started, and really get the ball rolling and and I was able to do that with the mini album. I had a great summer uhm this is our second to last show of the summer …

Ines: Yeah. In Europe.

Sarah: Yeah, we do one more in ah in Belgium. There for tomorrow but then that’s it and it’s been a great summer. I … I’ve learned now what it’s like to play with the new band and what it’s like to be out there on my own and without my brother and now now I feel really ready to have the full album released in October and by the time I go out on the road again and really do my own club shows next year I’ll be really you know I feel like I’ll I’ll be really well prepared and everyone will be prepared ‘cause I’ve I will have done this and it’s kinda like a little introduction to what it’s gonna be.

Ines: I wish you all the best for the new album.

Sarah: Thank you very much. Thanks a lot.

Ines: Yeah. You worked with Emily Saliers on …

Sarah: Yeah.

Ines: For one song I guess?

Sarah: Yeah. Yeah. She happen to be … they were … the Indigo Girls were playing in Los Angels uhm right around the time when I was recording there. So .. and I … this song that that I recorded with her it’s called “Sister” and from from the beginning ah it was my it was my dream to have her play on it and to have her doing backing vocals on it because I thought it was perfect. So I told her already like maybe six or seven months ago like “when I record, I hope you can come and play the song because it’s perfect.” And then … it was just a coincidence that they were actually playing in California when I was recording because I was only there for two weeks. And ah so she came by for a day and ah played on it uhm she’s the only one playing guitar on the song and she does some harmonies it’s ah it was fantastic.

Ines: I’m looking forward to this song because I love the Indigo Girls too and …

Sarah: Ah! Right. Ah right. Yeah. It’s … you’ll you’ll recognize her guitar playing if you’re an Indigo Girls fan. It’s very you know the second she comes in it’s just like uhm ha you know it’s like a first verse and then between the first and second verse it turns so Indigo Girls. But it’s so beautiful you know it’s her guitar playing that’s what it it’s a big part of what makes the Indigo Girls is how she plays. So uhm I I just love that we recorded it. It was very special ‘cause we recorded it live.

Ines: Oh, that’s good.

Sarah: Ah we were in the same room and uhm her guitar and my vocals were recorded at the same time and we didn’t change anything. We didn’t tweak after, we didn’t bring(?) the computer, or do anything to it. She just put on another solo guitar solo on it later and she did some harmonies later but the fact that we recorded live just the way it is uhm that’s very special to me too. Actually we’re playing the song tonight.

Ines: Oh?

Sarah: Uhm and it’s called “Sister” so you’ll you’ll probably recognize it so that that way you’ll know.

Ines: Okay, thank you. Uhm the songs you put on ah no, no. Did you work with other artists on the album or was it just Emily Saliers?

Sarah: No, just Emily. Just Emily worked on this. I ah I I also had a drummer that we met through the Indigo Girls: Brady Blade. Ah I thought he was gonna be in town too so I called and said “You wanna come in and play a song?” He’s like “actually I’m in Sweden but I’ll be happy so happy to play on your record so he kinda did me a favor and came all the way to LA from Sweden to play on ah five tracks and he sounds fantastic and he’s now gonna be on the k’s Choice tour in October too so uhm so that worked out great. And then Eric plays bass uhm and that’s it. Everything else is just producer and producer and me and I didn’t have anyone else come by and play on it.

Ines: No guitar player? Just you or..?

Sarah: No, producer. Producer is a guitar player too so he played all the guitars.

naja, ich hatte vor, näher auf die neue fan base einzugehen (und daß ihre go lieder sehr wohl alte fans verschreckt hat), die bootleg frage und ob sie nicht ein offizielles coming out machen möchte.



ja nicht wirklich langweilig, also beim interview fand ichs nicht langweilig, jetzt beim nachlesen ist's halt nicht so spannend, wie's vielleicht sein hätte können.



also das find ich gar nicht so schlimm, das mag ich irgendwie. mich stört mehr, wenn sie eine schon beantwortete frage nochmals beantwortet in einer einzigen antwort, weil sie grad so schön im erzählen ist. und dann das patriotische "i admire the soldiers".

Ines: Oh, okay, okay, okay. So do you know what happens with k’s Choice after the US tour? Or is it just to promote the DVD and the CD and then it’s again you and Gert and ?

Sarah: Uhm. That’s the way I mean it’s kinda weird timing you know with with the k’s Choice DVD and CD coming out in the States but a again it’s out of our control and we’re just happy that it’s coming out you know? Whenever it is. So we’re happy that we found a label who’s very excited about it. And we’re happy that we can tour around it because that’s not easy either to find a good tour to be on. So we’re just gonna do it and see what happens, you know? The plan is that Gert will just move on with his stuff and I’ll move on with my stuff and and ah you know we’ll get together later when we’re done with our solo stuff. But but you’ll never know if I mean if by some ah miracle something happens with k’s Choice in the States and we’ll have to do more work there of course we will, you know? But so far all that’s planned is the one month ah the one month tour.

Ines: Okay. And so your album “Go” – the songs that are on your album did you choose them? Did you think they were the best to put out there?

Sarah: Yeah, they were uhm we usually we kinda start recording my favorite songs and so the first eight songs that I had were all songs that I really loved. Uhm there were a couple of songs that we didn’t record that I loved because I wanted Eric to play on it and he couldn’t that time. Uhm so ah but all those songs on that mini album are like ah four of those songs were already recorded and and five “Don’t stop” we recorded extra because I wanted that to be on there. That was a song that was like a new song that I’d written with a with John O’Brian. And ah but it was a very it was very important to us that when we released the mini album that it wasn’t like a throw away EP, you know? It wasn’t gonna be like one single and then four songs that I’m not gonna use, you know? It was very important to me that it was that it was a legimate album. Who’s very small but that every song had it’s place. And if I’m releasing a full album all those five songs would have been on there. So uhm that was very important to me. And now actually a couple of those songs – not all of them – but two or three will be on the full album too. Uhm just because I I for me they are too good to not put on the full album. So they’re gonna be but not not all of them not all five of them.

Ines: The reason I was asking this is because I really like „Grey“, it’s it’s one of the best songs you’ve ever written

Sarah: Mhm, thank you.

Ines: in my opinion. And I really like “Follow me”. And the other songs are okay songs but not songs that really dig me, you know?

Sarah: Why?

(anmerkung: okay, hier hab ich meine erste chance verpaßt, aber ich wollte die gute stimmung nicht verderben, indem ich ihr sage, daß die songs nichtssagend sind. sorry, leute).
